Neck and shoulder tension is so common it almost feels normal. Long hours at a desk, screen time, driving, manual work — it all adds up to a pattern many people carry without thinking about it. Massage doesn't fix the cause overnight, but it can be a meaningful part of feeling better and moving more freely.

What's actually going on

Most neck and shoulder tightness involves a small group of muscles working too hard: the upper traps, levator scapulae, the muscles along the spine and the suboccipitals at the base of the skull. When they stay 'switched on' too long, they get tight, achy and sometimes refer pain into the head as tension headaches.

How massage may help

Targeted remedial work and trigger point therapy may help relieve some of that load. Firm, focused pressure into the tight points can settle the muscle, while careful stretching can help restore a feeling of length and ease. Hot stone work is another option for shoulders that feel cold and locked up.

How often should you book?

  • If symptoms are severe, fortnightly sessions for a short stretch can help establish progress
  • Many people settle into a four to six week rhythm once things improve
  • Combine sessions with simple movement habits — short walks, regular stretches and good water intake
