If you've ever stared at the booking options and felt unsure whether to choose remedial or deep tissue massage, you're not alone. They look similar on paper, but they take quite different approaches.
Remedial massage in a nutshell
Remedial massage is a problem-solving treatment. It's about assessing what's tight, restricted or sore and then selecting techniques to help. That might mean firm pressure in one spot, gentle holds in another and a stretch in a third. The goal is targeted change — not just 'a massage', but a massage shaped to what's going on in your body.
Deep tissue massage in a nutshell
Deep tissue is a style of pressure rather than a problem-solving framework. It uses slow, sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It's often great for long-standing tightness that lighter touch hasn't shifted.
Which should you book?
- You want a therapist to investigate and treat specific symptoms — remedial
- You know what you want is firm pressure on tight muscles — deep tissue
- You're carrying long-term postural tension — either can work; mention your preferences
- You're new to massage and unsure — book remedial and let Sarah guide the pressure
In practice, many remedial sessions include deep tissue techniques where they're useful. The label matters less than the conversation you have with your therapist before the session begins.
